Everything you need to know about the lightweight, ergonomic instruments that never need to be sharpened.

State-of-the-Art Metal

XP Sharpen-Free technology is NOT a coating. We combine titanium nitride and carbon with stainless steel to create a strong, always-sharp metal.

Superior to Stainless Steel

XP Sharpen-Free instruments never have to be sharpened, and they retain their edge as long as or longer than traditional stainless steel.

Ergonomic Benefits

A sharper metal means using less pressure to remove calculus. This allows for gentle “shaving” using lighter strokes, saving your hands and wrists.

What makes XP instruments sharpen-free?

When titanium nitride and carbon are permeated with high-quality stainless steel, the instrument’s metallurgic composition changes, making a much more durable material known as XP technology. It is NOT a coating that can be removed, as the technology is embedded within the metal itself.

Below is a close-up of the resulting defect-free surface of the smooth XP metal vs. the bumpy non-XP metal. The bumps you see are pieces of large macroparticles that may cause a patient to notice a louder “scratchy” sound due to surface roughness. XP Sharpen-Free instruments help decrease auditory discomfort.

How do XP instruments compare to stainless steel?

XP instruments are made using a patented process that blends two super-strong metals into one, changing the metallurgic makeup to create a razor-sharp edge that stays sharp throughout the instrument’s lifespan. The chart below shows how conventional scalers hold up compared to XP scalers over time.

Is the scaling technique different?

Holding the instrument in a gentle C-shaped grasp allows a light “exploratory scaling” touch. Shave through calculus using a few light strokes instead of fracturing off calculus.

A lighter touch aids in ergonomic hand protection, minimizes risk of wrist and hand problems, and helps prevent burnishing calculus during scaling.

What are hygienists saying?

I no longer stress out over my instruments being dull and not having time to sharpen. American Eagle Instruments have taken that stress off my plate. I love having extra time to spend on other things … like my patients.

American Eagle Instruments, specifically XP Sharpen-Free instruments, have changed out I practice clinically and I will love them forever for that. My ergonomics are better, my patients are happier and healthier with the lighter shaving stroke, and my practice is able to retain patients because of how much more they enjoy their hygiene appointment!

I decided to give the American Eagle XP Sharpen-Free technology a try and I am so happy that I did! Although there is a learning curve when instrumenting with XP Sharpen-Free, I immediately saw my efficiency improve. It cut my scaling time nearly in half with my periodontally involved patients, and they stay sharper longer than any of the previous instruments I have used in the past.
